Well, this year the theme is the best ever. Taste. It is what rules everyone’s food choices. Mine too. This year’s theme is “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right”. I couldn’t agree more. Think about it. Every time we put food in our mouth it is OUR choice, right? We choose what we want to eat and it HAS to taste great. Well, what if we have something else going on in our body? What if we have: diabetes, cancer, heart disease or a food allergy? Then what? That is when a RDN can really help with the balance of conquering a disease or condition with ….TASTE! Is it possible? I know it is.

This month I want to showcase a few awesome RDNs. The first one in this blog (more in future blogs) is (in my opinion), the master of diabetes management: Toby Smithson, CDE, RDN. Toby is the master of living life to the fullest while living with Type I diabetes and she teaches others how to do the same. This is what impresses me about Toby…and that she travels the world, takes on a new culture and maintains a healthy lifestyle with complete control over the diabetes. Naturally, she was asked to write a book about it…and welcome to the Wiley book, “Diabetes Meal Planning and Nutrition for Dummies”. She co-authored this book with Dr. Alan Rubin.

Book cover Diabetes MealIf you have ever read a “Dummies” book, you know they are very useful as references for any question you have on the topic. My take on this book is that it is very helpful to the newly diagnosed: Type 1, Type 2 or gestational diabetes. It is also helpful if you are a family member of a person living with diabetes. I find it may also be a fantastic resource to younger adults and teens. I personally work mostly with families, moms that are pregnant and teens that are newly diagnosed with Type 1 or 2 OR I see teens with uncontrolled diabetes in an inpatient setting at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL. I see this book as a tool for teens to use so they can control their food choices and manage diabetes the best they can. The book showcases everything from Understanding Diabetes to Customizing Your Meals to Starting Your Recipe Collection.

What’s great about RDNS is that we each have our own area of expertise. Not all RDNs work with kids, not all work in hospitals and not all like to cook. One of the reasons Toby and I are RDN friends is that we have passion for what we do…and so many RDNs do!
